Hi Gary

That sounds like a very interesting seminar! Such a pity I live in England because I'm sure this would be of value to anyone! Maybe you could tell me more about what you'll be doing and describe some of the techniques and scenarios!
Thanks
Tony

I am just posting to put this thread to the front. The seminar isnt that far away.Anyone within driving distance of the Tri-cities area of East Tennesee needs to attend,it will be worth your time and money.

What kind of material do you go over in an anti-terrorism seminar and how does that differ from a seminar that you would give to corrections officers dealing with an inmate riot or a seminar to regular civilians dealing with a home invasion robbery? The 911 attack was the first terrorist attack that I heard of that involved a knife, everything else had guns or bombs. What do you address in this seminar? I say this out of curiosity and not criticism. Can you expand beyond "...Maim,Break,Kill..."?

The difference is that in a situation involving terrorists,we do not want to restrain or arrest terrorists,we must KILL them. Here is a breif description:Empty hand terminations, gun and knife disarms, knife terminations, improvised weapons, neck breaks, spine breaks, tactical aircraft senarios............................................

Mr. Crawford, I wish you much success with your seminar(s). Allow a question or two, if I may. Do you plan on also giving a liberal dose of the mental side of the equation? Such as the willingness to allow a hostage taken (usually a flight attendant - female), to be sacrificed in order to get to the terrorist(s)? Also, the single mindedness to forget one's own safety and be willing to possibly die, in order to eliminate the threat and save others. To be inventive in using everyday items as weapons (i.e. a common comb used in a cutting fashion against the neck - carotid artery, keys protruding from a fist for an eye removal, a pen or pencil either in the eye into the brain or into the throat, etc.). Even people that train in the arts, are not that aware of what could/should be done, should they find themselves in this situation. I realize that people are now more willing to get involved, should something occur on a plane. We have had stories of people restraining some idiot on a flight, but none dealing with a successful terrorist disarm. Much different mindset when looking at a weapon against somebodies throat, and knowing that if you act, it will cause that persons death. The mental state of people, even trained ones, change when confronted with absolutes. Again, I wish you much success with your seminar(s).

Respectfully
Mike Dunn

Mr. Dunn,Yes the mental part is highly emphisized and improvised weapons are also a big part! The idea I try to get across is"Your personal safety should be the last concern, you are in a situation where every innocent person will die if you do not act without hesitation, you will most likely be injured in some way, don't mind the blood(except noting that it is slippery),don't let anything besides your own death stop you".The seriousness of the material is why I love teaching this.I get the utmost attention from the students.I am very impressed with your knowledge on the subject.Have you attended simular seminars yourself?

Not so much attended as conducted. The group I train with gave a closed seminar of sorts to the local commercial airlines pilot union rep, several months ago. Surfice to say, that the airline industry in general, is not that interested in training their people. On the other hand, the venue you are choosing (open seminar for civilians), is in reality the only way to achieve any successful training and awareness. As for myself, lets just say I've been around the block more than once. :uhyeah:

Mr.Dunn,The more of us out there the better!!I wish the airlines could follow Isreal's example,of course U.S regulations won't permit that yet.Do Air Marshals stand out as much as I think they do?I tell my people not to do anything before the air marshals make their move since they are probably the first to die.

On the subject of Air Marshals. I don't think I personally would wait for intervention from them. Several reasons; 1) they are not on every flight and their numbers are supposedly undergoing reductions. 2) If the flight should be lucky enough to have one on board, location plays a major part. If he's in the rear and the trouble is up front, without immediate reactions, by the time he gets to where he needs to be, it could be too late. Either way, the more time a terrorist has to secure his position, the harder it is to unsecure him. So time is also your enemy.

I agree, the statement is for when Air Marshals are there and do act quickly to make sure the air marshals do not mistake you for a terrorist,of course evey situation will be different. All men should try to be seated in isle seats, since once terrorists take over, they will re-seat everyone, women in isle seats, men,as close to windows as possible. If one is to make a move,do so before this happens. That is the point of no return.

Thank you for asking,First, wich may not mean much,Trained and tested as instructor By Gary Dill. Most importantly,30+yrs martial arts and former USAF Security Specialist.

You must have had some time at Altus, if you trained with Gary Dill. How long were you with him?

I trained under him for three years,no,I wasn't lucky enough to be assigned to Altus,I was in S.A.C. at Loring Afb,Me

For all those interested,The seminar went very well. All who had attended bought copies of the video tape my daughter shot at the seminar and since then I have schedualed two more dates at other schools on my local area.
