Well the Victorian Government (a state government in Australia) has banned "cage" fights.
This basically covers fights like those seen in UFC and other MMA compititions.

In my opinion - yes, MMA is violent, no more than boxing, and thus requires strict regulation. Banning it will simply drive it underground in this state - which will make it more dangerous.

John McCain attempted to do that here as well. It lasted only a short time and the shows were back on PPV. It'll be interesting to see if they change to format there to what its like here, ie: sanctioned, format similar to a boxing match, etc.

MMA's still not making any headway in NY. Though we have many fighters from NY and even an IFL team (NY Pitbulls) the closest places we can go to an event is in NJ. I find it funny because so much of NY's history surrounds epic boxing matches at Madison Square Garden, quite possibly the world's most famous arena and uniquely known for boxing for a good long time (before the Knicks and Rangers moved in).

John McCain was bought and paid for by the Boxing promoters a long time ago. He was even willing to hold up all legislation in the Senate back in 2004 and 2005 if it didn't include a huge ration of pork for his boxing buddies. I think he was the dork who coined the term "human cockfights". He didn't manage to kill MMA.

Victoria? That might be another matter. I recall attempts by the government in at least one Australian State to ban all unauthorized meetings by groups of more than two or three people. And Oz has now gutted freedom of speech on tha Intrawebs.

Well, I don't do the MMA, but it seems a sad state of affairs to me when something is banned and it's no more harmful then boxing per say.

Someone mentioned underground, that's where it'll go and probably make alot more money doing it.

The state is which gatherings of more than two people are considered illegal would be Queensland, and it is the only one. Victoria has its own idiosyncratic laws, like it being illegal for men to wear pink hot pants (buts that's another story).

The whole web thing, and the cage match situation in Victoria, is symptomatic of the desire to sanitise the world in which children are being raised. It seems that everything nowadays is pornographic or too violent, or too something else for children to hear, watch, or participate in.

Personally, I'm not a fan of cage matches because the cage tends to get in the way and makes it difficult to see properly. MMA bouts are already tough to watch, you really have to pay attention. The cage just makes it more difficult.

Its no more dangerous than an ordinary ring really. OK, so you can get slammed up against the steel cage. So what. In an ordinary ring you can take an uncontrolled four foot fall to the concrete surround. I know which I'd prefer to suffer.

After doing a bit more background reading it is my understanding that the banning of caged fights is the first step towards the banning of MMA fights.

This was just the first of a bunch of stupid laws introduced during the holiday period to avoid public backlash.

Recently there has been a big push for people to ride bikes to work - good for the environment, good for road conjestion, good for public health. Then they go and ban bikes from being taken onto trains during peak hour - and considering that Melbourne (capital of the State of Victoria) has suburbs that are easily 50km from the centre this move is just stupid....

Oh yea, and to make it worse they then bumped up the cost of a train ticket by over 10%.......

The only thing i can say - I DIDN"T VOTE FOR THEM!!
