Baby name needs government approval?...Really?...Your serious?

[h=1]Icelandic girl wins right to use her given name[/h]
A 15-year-old Icelandic girl has been granted the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother, despite the opposition of authorities and Iceland's strict law on names. Reykjavik District Court ruled Thursday that the name "Blaer" can be used. It means "light breeze."
The decision overturns an earlier rejection by Icelandic authorities who declared it was not a proper feminine name. Until now, Blaer Bjarkardottir had been identified simply as "Girl" in communications with officials.

I got in trouble in high school. Kept putting my name as boB. English teacher gave me a hard time. I said 'I think I know my own name, you can stop taking points off for it now'. There was a parent-teacher conference scheduled.....

I got thrown out of a class because I would not respond to the teacher when she called me Donald. My name is not, has never been Donald. My name is DON. I sat silently, she flipped, called the principal into the room. I won. Spent the rest of the year answering the phone that period for the secretary.

I once had a waitress with a nametag that read "Vajinea"... seriously, you can't make something like that up.

I guess the real question is, should people suffer for the stupidity of their parents?

On the one hand I can see not letting the government interferring in something like this. On the other hand, I have seen very stupid parents damning their kids with dumb names.

The Thing about Iceland is that the government is the people and the people the government so as shown by this case there's always a way to compromise, something not many countires can do.
