Playing Go has been also know as the Warriors game. To some enthusiasts of Go, there is a philosophical bent to it. As in martial arts, a player's Go game is an extension of their view of life.
Pente is cool, used to play alot of that. But no go. Watched these guys play it here at work once. They had a real nice board and it looked interesting. I had no idea what they were talking about half the time.
I play. But I only go against the computer. I think I learned a lot from it. But I still get beaten at all but the lowest levels.
I may even be so bold to say that it should be a required experience for all those studying asian martial arts. Mind you, I am not saying you have to get to expert level. But it is something that should be experienced by the serious student.
I bought a go set a couple years ago just before I left Japan, thinking that I could teach myself how to play the game. Big mistake. I know the rules, but I still have no idea how to play. I guess its one of those things that you need a human to teach you.
This site is great to find opponents to play, you can start at 30 Kyu with other beginners... it has a ranking system that will automatically move you up. If you make it to 9 Dan... give me a call, I'll want to take lessons from you.
