I have some doubts as to how realistic it is if we want to avoid the infrastructure collapse that is on its way due to private sector mismanagement of the utilities but I concur that we used to manage to run the country without spending more than we had ... so, in theory, it should be possible to do it again.

We have had surpluses for 19 out of the last 41 years. We have had conservative governments for 22 of those years. Of the 19 surpluses, only 4 were achieved by Labor governments. Now with the mess the last Government made they are predicting 10 years 'til the next surplus. No prizes for guessing the best fiscal managers.
