Three generations of black belts.

This past Saturday, my family and I made the adventurous trip in snow covered interstate highways and elevated icy roads from Ohio to Charleston, WV for my son to test for his first dan under our Kwan Jang Nim, Grandmaster Sok Ho Kang. I tested in the exact same dojang in 1991, after spending 6 years as a colored belt. My father had tested for his first dan a year or so before I did. It brought back a flood of memories from my first dan test. The examiners board for our tests back then consisted of various Korean masters from Ohio and West Virginia, including Master IJ Kim, Master Moon, Master Joon Pyo Choi, Master Kyong Won Ahn, Master Choong Wong Kim, and our Kwan Jang, Master Sok Ho Kang. Saturday the examiners board consisted of Grandmaster Kang and Grandmaster Rick Lykins. I was more nervous for his test than I was for my own! I knew he would be held to an exacting standard being the son of a school owner and the grandson of a school owner. He passed his exam without reservation!
