Better that than a false apology. I'm not sure what purpose a coerced apology is really supposed to serve.
 
I don't know how it is in the UK. In the USA, any judge/magistrate worth their salt would make some punishment contingent on the letter being a proper and remorseful sounding letter. Then if he did that, he would get the original, harsher, punishment.

The reply is dispicable, but then theives and burglars aren't know for their smarts, and can be a strange lot. Especially burglars.
 
Maybe a couple of days in the stocks on the village green will fix his attitude. %-} Of course that could never happen now because we live in an enlightened age.
