This article very succinctly puts across the differences in military preparedness and political environment between 1982 and 2012.

One line at the line end I find particularly interesting is that, despite all the hard talk, the general feeling is that war is not a likely outcome of the present tensions.

Oil may be what the current dispute is about - according to some sources, a compromise whereby Britain allows the profits to be split 50-50 is likely to be considered.

Ahaaaaa!

As Churchill said 'it's better to jaw jaw than war war' even if it means splitting profits.

Oh and there is no British nuclear submarine in the waters off the Falklands :wink2:

As long as oil fields are concerned things may become more "interesting" given enought time to simmer :D

Why the hell would London bow to Argie belligerence?

Exactly so, Scott. If they had a real case and the islanders wanted to be Argentinian then it'd be a different ball game, whether we'd discovered oil there or not. As things stand, they are sabre rattling to divert attention from their problems at 'home'.

No kidding. Unfortunately BamBam's idiocy with the whole Malvinas crap gives their claim the illusion of legitimacy on the international stage, especially within the OAS. One of these days London is going to have to look at the Americas straight in their collective eyes and give them (err.. us) a hearty 'F**k you!'

Won't happen under Cameron though, unfortunately.

It may yet come to that one day, aye, Scott.

Many here are no longer content to be the 'tail of the dog' for the almighty USA, it is true. Even those such as myself, who see America, for all it's many and manifest flaws, as a lesser evil than that which would replace it, are not entirely happy about the way we get dragged along as a 'cloak of consensus' to support what the 'money men' decide is the next 'democratic' course of action.

I think, pragmatically, much will depend on whether the bubble, that fuels an illusory appearance of wealth and power, is publicly burst or not. The Great Game has room for loyalty but survival is paramount after all.

I just hope it happens before my intended immigration to the UK happens within the next handful of years.

‎30 Years ago today 2 Para attacked the settlement of Goose Green. The Battle took over 24 hrs. 17 Airborne Warriors Died and 64 were injured. This is a legendary Battalion Action and a proud moment in the history of The Parachute Regiment. RIP the Fallen.

I read the autobiography of Mike Curtis, former 2 Para and later SAS, called CQB: Close Quarter Battle. Recapturing Goose Green was prominent in the book. Interesting read.
