A very interesting insight drawn from interpretations of new archaeology it seems. I shall await the noted documentary eagerly (this sort of thing being in my old field of endeavour before I fell from grace and became an engineer :D).

Sounds fascinating, but the article is somewhat confused; interchanging origins and purpose as if they are the same. Maybe this was on purpose to get us to tune in? Anyways, I hope the show is broadcast on one of my channels.

Researchers from University College London said their findings overturned what was thought about the origins of the monument.

Until now it had been thought that Stonehenge was built as an astronomical calendar or observatory.

The latest findings, which came after a decade of research, suggested it was the act of building the monument rather than its purpose that was key.

Wow, 200 years older. LOL This reminds me of the Zoroastrian Religion. They built and entire city under the ground, and then the people forgot about it. It wasn't to live there or worship. I think it was also the act of building it that is important.

at least they put in a lot more thought into Stonehenge than they do into a lot of highway projects around here....

http://www.tomknoxbooks.com/the-genesis-secret/gobekli-tepe/ Here is another Temple buried so no one could use it or remember it existed. I Love it when somebody comes along and debunks everything we thought we knew. :)

A nice little clip about Gobekli Tepe, with one of my favourite anthropologists, Dr. Alice Roberts:

And a different tack on the core subject, including an insight into an astounding turn of events in human history that we take utterly for granted and yet was absurdly unlikely to have happened:

Very interesting.
But isn't the concept of "new archeology" an oxymoron?

"Build it...and they will come..." LOL Perhaps it was the world's first Ren-Fest? Cool stuff! But seriously, I'd like to know a little more about the "why"... Why would people travel that far to participate in building it?

People have (and still do) stranger things in the name of religion....

While all the supposition is interesting. What would really amuse me is if when the reason is finally found, it was built to confuse and confound future generations.
We ought to build something for that reason.

And the Sphinx is vastly more ancient than mainstream archaeology wants to tell us. The secret history of humanity, though, will remain just that for most.......a secret.

There's a big slap waiting for you when you get off duty, my friend :D.

Actually, those of us who have been in the field (there's a pun there but I just can't raise the enthusiasm I am afraid) do have a habit of using "archaeology" to describe both the process and the examined objects/strata. But clearly in this case I should have used a phrase more like "newly executed archaeological investigation".

Aye, given that there are at least two dynasties completely missing from the 'tourist' version of Egyptian history, the whole area of research has been tainted for quite some time. Having arch-fraudster Hawass running the show for so long did noone any favours when it came to doing actual history rather than revenue boosting story telling.

Another fascinating documentary about the far past here:

It includes a theory that I cannot believe I have not heard before to explain the eradication of the Clovis culture from the Northern US.

Tho' it is ludicrous to do so, leaving aside the immediate human cost of misery, torment and death, to have what is arguably the founding nation of humanity tear asunder it's history in a present conflict is a cost all of it's own:

I remember watching a documentary on this subject (can't remember all the particulars), but it based it on the erosion factors of the sphynx and came to two main conclusions 1) The sphynx was older and predated the egyptian culture as we know it and 2) The area was flooded at one point with a great flood causing some of the erosion that is seen.

That would be the work of Robert M. Schoch and John Anthony West I suspect. I meant to link some of their stuff in earlier in the thread but couldn't find a decent video source of the excellently entertaining Timewatch documentary I saw on it (talked about it on here I seem to recall so maybe some archaeology through my own posts might find something :D).

Here is Mr. Scoch's own site: http://www.robertschoch.com/sphinxcontent.html

This is not the Age of the Sphinx Timewatch documentary but it covers some of the highlight points of the argument:

Did find a site with a poor quality copy of the Timewatch documentary:

If memory serves they believe it was not the Sphinx back then, but an actual Lion, and after time the face simply fell off, and it was then that they carved the face. :)
