Some experimenting with Bassai Sho

Good video. Unfortunately I really can't afford any serious input here since I have never been taught Bassai Sho. The original TSD school that I came from did not teach it at the levels I attained. I know Sensei Jay S. Penfil knows this kata. Perhaps I'll ask him to teach me the kata and some bunkai next time we meet so that I may gain a better understanding.

My teacher learned this kata from GM Ahpo. It's almost identical to the version that was practiced in Shotokan years ago.

I thought they where different enough already. Although the TSD and Karate versions of each seem different.

Learnt Bassai So Hyung last night at Tang Soo Do training, had learnt Bassai Dai years ago while doing TKD. Went looking on youtube for other examples and found the Bassai Sho to be different so the TSD Bassai So.

You can see that it's the same form but they are different, probably both different to the original.

Cheers

Thanks for the videos! I like the karate versions of the form. I'm not sure how the TSD one got modded up so much.

I do a Shotokan version of the form and agree that the applications are very similar. In my interpretation the Dai version is showing fewer locks and focusing on strikes. The Sho version shows more trips, sweeps, etc, and ends with a nice shihonage.

I like the shotokan version. The ending is great! I'm trying to figure out something to do differently in regards to the high kicks down the middle. Any suggestions?

Returning wave kick? Sort of a low crescent that snaps back in. The double hammer fists would be the upper body control of a sweep....

(Did that make sense?)

Yeah, I got that. I was also thinking about a straight in heel kick to the knee after you grabbed and dragged someone over.

That works too. I guess the question is what type of kick/footwork has mechanics that are similar enough to both interpretations.

Have you seen any videos of the original? Itosu was the originator of the split for Dai and Sho. Therefore, maybe Kobayashi Ryu practices it?

Youtube explorations .... are interesting. Passai Sho looks much like passai dai from some of them.

Aren't they! I've been looking for an okinawan version of passai sho that somewhat resembles shotokan for a long time. It had to come from somewhere...
