That just depends on who is teaching it and for what purpose. It is very effective at self defense when learned and applied properly.

You'll find some more info. by searching the site (watch out for variations in spelling).

I think it looks interesting. I believe the self-defense aspect was originally the key aspect but they have added sport to it relatively recently to insure its popularity. This is just my impression however!

Shuai Chiao is several things: 1) a sport 2) a combative fighting system 3) a term for applications from any Chinese system or art that involve wrestling, throws, and takedowns. So you see, you can practice Shuai Chiao as a stand alone fighting system, or you can compete in Shuai Chiao competitions as a combative sport, or you can execute Shuai Chiao techniques native to whatever kung fu style you practice (Tai Chi, Preying Mantis, Wing Chun, etc...)

What is Shuai-chiao?
Modern Shuai-chiao (competing to throw) is the culmination of the ancient, crude, practical and effective combat grappling method of the battlefield - that has evolved into a sophisticated and efficient no non-sense approach to combat.
Its training method of using punches, kicks and joint-locks in the context of throwing can conform to all martial arts styles. Its philosophy share the same principle of Tai-chi Yin and Yang, the traditional cosmic law of China. In fact, the advanced Shuai-chiao practitioner views Shuai-chiao and Tai-chi as two sides of the same coin meeting at a junction, but coming from totally different origin. Shuai-chiao's techniques are the culmination of tested grappling experience in the best environment - the battlefield. Today, it is still a part of military and police training as well as a national sport in China and Taiwan.
