Thieves.

Seattle has another "Edith Macefield" refusing to sell her property. An elderly woman has turned down the City of Seattle's offer to purchase her prime, waterfront parking lot.
So, what does the city do?
The Seattle City Council voted 8 to 0 to acquire "through negotiation or condemnation" the waterfront parking lot that belongs to a 103-year-old Spokane woman.
Council members unanimously passed the 19-page ordinance Monday with no debate.

The city attorney is authorized to "condemn, take, damage, and appropriate" the property at 1101 Western Avenue. After "just compensation" the city will turn the land over to the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Republic Parking Northwest manages the 134-stall lot. Yes, the city is acquiring a privately-owned parking lot to create a city-owned lot.

Nice.

"Sell us your property"

"No"

"You have no choice."

"No"

"Ok, your property is now condemned, get out and heres a pittance. We're the Government, you are our *****."

nice...stealing from a 103 yo woman.
Charming.
it is a parking lot? I am assuming it's all about the revenue...how sad.

First, I have no real opinion on this story. Don't know much about it, so the following is just for your information. I'm not condoning this (or condemning it).

If it's on Western Ave downtown, it's likely more to do with the demolition of the Alaska Way Viaduct and the plans to revitalize that area down there. They're building a tunnel to replace the viaduct (which is a deathtrap if we have another earthquake... which we will). And with the viaduct gone, that entire area will open up, creating an opportunity to really do something nice with the waterfront area, similar to what Baltimore, Boston and many other cities have done.

A local TV stations news reports

SEATTLE — The city is forcing a 103-year-old Spokane woman to sell her parking lot in Seattle to make way for, well, a parking lot.The Seattle City Council voted Monday to take the lot near the waterfront by eminent domain, using a portion of the $30 million provided by the state to take care of parking issues around the waterfront. Hundreds of public parking spaces will be lost when the state begins dismantling the Alaskan Way Viaduct for the digging of the tunnel. The construction will last until 2020.
The lot is owned by Spokane resident Myrtle Woldson. She doesn’t want to sell, so the City Council voted unanimously to use it’s power of eminent domain to take it after paying Woldson “fair market value.”

This is a PARKING LOT.

The reason why the city is stealing it?

The city council issued the exasperated statement that “there are no alternatives” to providing the public with parking.

So they are taking a parking lot, that is being used as a parking lot because, the public needs a parking lot.

Citing the need for more public parking, the City Council of Seattle made a unanimous decision this week to force a 103-year-old woman to sell a plot of land that is already a parking lot.

*** Hats!

So the city wants to take the lot to make a lot? Well they did legalize pot there maybe the council was stoned and didnt realize her lot was the same as their lot.

all about who gets the money...

This is a consequence of the Kelo decision at the Supreme Court...President's pick justices, justices make these stupid decisions...remember that in 2014, when the Senators who will confirm the next justices are up for election, and 2016 when the next President will pick the replacement justices...
