Australian archaeologists working at a mass WWI grave at Fromelle in France have finally found something to prove Australian soldiers were buried at the site.

A RISING Sun badge has provided the first conclusive proof that Australian soldiers are buried in a mass grave in France, the army says.
Archeologists found the badly corroded bronze badge, worn on the collars of Diggers in World War I, at the gravesite at the weekend.
Maj-Gen Mike O'Brien said the discovery confirmed the field next to Pheasant Wood, Fromelles, was a sacred site.
"I consider that offers proof a considerable number of bodies at this site must be Australians," Maj-Gen O'Brien said.
The remains of 30 soldiers have so far been uncovered in two weeks of excavation work on five burial pits at the site.
But projections indicate there are likely to be 10 times that number buried there.

While it is not likely that the soldiers will ever be properly identified, at least the location can be presented as a resting place for fallen soldiers now.

And may they rest in peace - and may their families take some closure from this find.

Lest we forget.

This was on the news here, they said the countries will have to decide whether to rebury the bodies there and make it a war grave or to take the bodies home to Australia. They hopefully should listen to what relatives want even though they may not be able to identify individual bodies.
I visited Vimy Ridge a couple of years ago, a very moving experience and I would defy anyone not to leave with tears in their eyes. So many young men lost. :asian:

Australia has a rather mixeed policy on the reutrn of the dead to Australia. I don't think that these fellows will be coming home though. The RSL wants them to stay where they are, and the French farmer on whose land the grave was found has offered it up as a memorial site.
