I had another thread here about my seized engine. When the car is in the shop, or I'm without a car for some reason, I actually enjoy getting something different to drive.

What would you rent if you were without a car for a few days? Last time out, when the 17y/o needed the car for a post-graduation cottage trip, I rented a Smart Car, just for me to go to and from work. It was fun. This time around, I was hoping to rent a Mini Cooper, but none were available. Can you tell I like small cars?

I have wanted to drive a Smart Car from the first time I seen one. My wifes dream car is a Mini Cooper, but she was asking if she could find one with an aluminum block V-8. I've created a monster!

What is a Smart Car? I'm not familiar?

Very sorry to hear about your seized engine, Gordon! That stinks :(

Something that may work...Toyota has a special rental program for its dealerships. Try calling a Toyota dealership near you to see if they have anything interesting to rent. Maybe a Prius?

Last time I had to rent a car, my regular vehicle was involved in a minor accident. My wife was driving to work. There was a p/u truck in front of her, and apparently the bed liner in the guys truck wasn't secure, so it flew out and hit the passenger side of my suv. Minor scratches and a dent, but nonetheless, damage is damage and I wanted it fixed.

The rental place was going to give me a mini van. Keep in mind, I was going to need this vehicle for a week. After showing how excited I was over this choice, *sarcastic tone :)* I ended up with a new '07 GMC Envoy. Black, fully loaded...I was happy! :)

All that being said...if its a few days, I gotta have something nice. :)

Smart Cars are great -- I wouldn't put one on the expressway with a gun to my head, but for getting around town cheap, parking, small turning circle, etc, it's the bomb. Given my normal driving habits, I could put $12 (Can) in the diesel tank and drive for two weeks. The tailgate style trunk just fits my equipment bag. It is very comfortable for me, and I am a very big man -- 6'3" and 225lbs.

They are the ones on the Wii ads. Little bitty things, 8' long and 5' wide. Seen a video of one hitting a concrete barricade at 70 MPH. It was amazing, the frigging doors still opened and closed and there was only a little intrusion into the passenger compartment.

Last time I rented a car it was on the militaries tab. I was sent TAD to the San Diego area and wound up renting a Mustang with 25 miles on the odometer. This was years ago when I was still young and stupid. That car was FAST. Since leaving the military the only rental vehicles I've driven were rented by my company while my truck was in the shop. Best one so far was a 379 series Peterbuilt that I just fell in love with. Nearly 7 miles per gallon and still pulled a mountain like a flat stretch. As for my dream rental...not really excited about anything on the market. I spend so much time behind the wheel at work that driving anything feels like a task to me.

When I travel to Denver CO for the Combat Hapkido seminar I rent a Ford Expedition. but that's just for the exta room...In daily commute situation it would be whatever I could find that cheap...Now when I do the Vegas vacation its a Lincon Towncar..
