GM Sullivan is very clear about the goals of the Karate Connection system. He says he wants his black belts to be able to respond in a spontaneous fashion, picking the moves they need to do and combining the movements from the 55 techniques in new and unique ways "on the fly", as they are needed.

Well, What do you think?

Do the various exercises and training drills in the IKCA system help achieve that goal?

As with any training drills they are a means to an end. Tools available to use how you will. If used properly and consistently then yes, the spontanaeity drills go a long way to helping a person respond in an "on the fly" manner.

Technique based systems work based on "relative body positioning", where you are at in relation to your opponent at any given moment in time. Repetition of these techniques develops what I like to call "snapshots" in the ole noggin datatbase. To put it simply you 'recognize" a snapshot and you go forward in the encounter based on that. Does that mean more is better? That's a debate that's been going on for awhile, I tend to think there is a point of diminishing returns, but maybe that's a topic for another thread.

While I haven't been with IKCA nearly as long as Bill (only about two years, for me) I have found that the drills used (line drill, semi-circle drill, etc) are effective training tools for the building of appropriate sponteneity. I say "appropriate" because the wrong spontaneous move could leave you extremely vulnerable to a different attack.

I have incorporated these drills in my classes and, while they aren't kenpo, yield the same type of results. I personally look forward to attending one of teh association's gatherings and see it done how GMs Sullivan and LeRoux intended.

Thanks, that helps me understand this subject.

Oye. I <3 the Circle of Humiliation. :) Really puts things into perspective when you have 5 people ringed around 200 degrees of angle around you and you have no idea who will attack first, but are forced to respond to them spontaneously. Good stuff.
