Hi everyone!

I hope Iā€™m posting in the right section. I recently started using customized mouth guards for nighttime teeth grinding and Iā€™m curious about a few things.

How often should these guards be replaced? Iā€™ve noticed mine gets worn down after a few months.

Also, any tips on cleaning them properly to avoid bacteria buildup? Iā€™ve heard mixed advice about using toothpaste versus mild soap.

has anyone experienced discomfort or fit issues over time?

Iā€™d love to hear your experiences and any recommendations you might have.

I have a bit of experience with night guards. I had one made by my dentist but I never liked it, and consequently didn't wear it. I mentioned it to my periodontist, and he said , "I make a nicely balanced nightguard". I wasn't sure what that meant, but once made, it was so much more comfortable. I had him make another one about 5 years later, since I had insurance money but just kept wearing the original one. I think I must have been wearing the original one for 15 years now.

My advice is to replace your mouthguard if it no longer fits well with your other jaw due to wear.

I just use denture cleaners every few nights. When I go to my periodontist every 3 months or so, the hygienist cleans it in an ultrasonic cleaner.
