Positive Press for Shooting Sports

On March 24, 2007, our provincial association was invited to participate in an Open House Sport Festival at the University of Manitoba. The event consisted of participants from a variety of sports and set up interactive displays with hands on demonstrations. This year, the Manitoba Provincial Rifle Association set up a display complete with a range for shooting air rifle. The range was manned by our team members, some of which have won medals at the Canada Winter Games and international events as well.

Here are some of the pics from the event. All I can say is it was a blast to be part of and by the end of the event we were definitely the hit of the event. At times we had 25-30 people waiting to give the rifles a try. It was definitely positive press for our sport. At least 150 people took their very first shot out of one of our guns. We had participants from all ages ranging from 7 to over 70. Shooting truly is a lifetime sport.

The other thing we did was set up a SCATT machine and have one of our shooters gear up and show how the use of the SCATT works.

From the picture below you can see four colors. The green is his hold pattern. The yellow showing the trigger pull, the pink is where the actual shot was placed, a 9.6 and the red is his follow through.

I agree, most excellent. Shooting sports presented in a rational, comprehensible, sporting fashion. Not as some sort of strange sacrosanct religious activity.

Well I doubt that a strange sacrosant religious cult like group would ever be invited to set up a booth at a sport show!

But, yes, it was great. We had a variety of rifles on display including the ones used in Full Bore shooting. In one of the pics you will notice a rather large target. That is the target the use when shooting 1000 yards.

Sport shooting has something of a good profile down here is Australia (not a big following, no gun sport has, we have cricket instead), mostly trap and double trap, because we have won gold medals at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. It is nice to see a broader variety of activities on display. The best way to promote a sport like this is to show its variety.

Agreed.

Taking the mystery out of the sport and meeting people face to face eliminates that "all shooters are gun toting idiots" mentality that many people have. We are hoping not only for positive press but a few new shooters as well.
