Papa San Canty - KUROSHI-DO - 1993

A legend of the martial arts in Brooklyn, Soke Papa San Canty has been teaching for decades. We caught him at an Aikido seminar teaching his modified version of karate, aikido and jiu-jitsu.

I'm going to try to stay constructive here, honestly. The execution was decent, but the majority of the flash from the throws (the degree of effect on the Uke) was mainly due to the Uke doing all the throwing himself. All in all a decent Aikido-like Jujutsu based demo. However....

The problem with Westerners naming themselves in this fashion and their systems does get highlighted here. "Soke" is a term for the head of a Japanese family, no Westerner would, or at least should, instill the title on themselves. And if that wasn't enough of a "Japanese" name, he then calls himself "Papa-san"? Add to this his claiming that "Koroshi Do" means "Way of the Black Warrior".... hmm, okay, but in what language? It certainly doesn't mean that in Japanese! Black in Japanese is "Kuro", not "Koro", "Shi" just means person, taken from "sha", so the only part he got right was "Do". Really, he is honest and upfront about the sources for the school, why doesn't he just say that and call it "Canty School Jujutsu"? I mean, Sanucces Ryu is just one of the offshots of another modern system, Vee Jitsu.

Hmm interesting , does that mean his wife is then called Mama San and does she manage a house full of .............nevermind.
