As a kid, I can remember a time when there was an East Germany and a Soviet Union, and how the East Germans and Soviets would usually win a lion's share of the gold medals at the Olympics.

It's a shame, though, that they had to resort to using steroids, in a day and age, when testing wasn't too good, if it existed at all, and how such steroid use led to all sorts of consequences, such as the one mentioned in the story below:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/11/sexchange.athlete/index.html

where one Heidi Krieger became Andreas Krieger.

The article also mentions how genetic doping could be on the horizon, when it comes to implementing gene therapy.

I was just coming to post the very same topic. It's sad these athletes were given steroids without their knowledge. I don't know much about gene therapy, but if anything, it sounds worse. I too remember when Germany was the Olympic powerhouse.

Gene therapy doesn't really work that well so far. Seems unlikely that it'll be a major factor. Myostatin blockers will be on the market before then.
