Is anyone else here a USENET refugee? I was a serious USENET junkie for a long time and racked up posts there like I do here. Now it's so overridden with spam, trolls, spam, nonsense, spam, and off-topic posts that while I still check a few favorites every day I rarely post there anymore.

I found the newsgroups in 1989 and they were great. Now, there's webboards!

I have been using the newsgroups for as long as I can remember, both for MA and non MA related topics. Back in the days before the web, that was pretty much the only game in town, other than maybe mailing lists. I'm basically where you are, checking some groups and rarely posting. I post on rec.m-a occasionally, but not nearly as much as I used to, as I feel that it has rapidly degenerated into a bit of a cesspool, unfortunately. I don't even scan it as much as I used to. I used to spend a decent amount of time on alt.martialarts.karate, but that seems to be a dead group, as is alt.bujinkan, and all of the other alt groups that were for specific arts (kyokushin, kempo, etc...). I agree - fora are pretty much where it's at today. I do still belong to a few mailing lists, but the delay in communication is kind of frustrating when you're used to the instant way we have here.

I never liked mailing lists. The only one I'm on is Eskrima Digest (which is excellent for the FMA).

That's Ray Terry's list, right? I remember that one from "back in the day." I'm on a western martial arts list, and I've been on CyberDojo, Aikido-L, and Ninpo-L in the past. They definitely don't have the traffic they used to.

I'm an old RMA junkie, who quickly converted to the glory of MT when I was made aware of it :) Frequented a couple of other newsgroups back in the day, but RMA was where more of my activity was. I wouldn't go back there if I got paid.

I'm on one anime-related mailing list now. I keep meaning to sign up for Escrima Digest. Maybe I'll do it right now.
