Hello, Ive been thinking about joining a martial art for a long time. Just curious wht would be good for a 31 yr old with tight hamstrings? As far as what i want from it, I want to be able to defend myself and others if needed..., and learn to focus my anger into something positive instead of destructive. Not the mention the health bonuses therein.

Welcome and Happy posting

As far as your question goes what is the main reason behind you wanting to start, Self defense, to get in shape or just and exorcise program.
With more info we maybe able to guide you in the right direction.

Welcome to Martial Talk! :)

As for training, there are a number of arts that can provide you with some great SD skills. What types of schools are in your area?

welcome to MT :wavey:

Welcome aboard! Most of us would love to tell you that the art that we study individually is the perfect art for you but we are also honorable enough to know that that may not be true. Tell us things like your general physical condition (aside from the hamstrings), what schools you have in the area, how quickly you want to be able to defend yourself, your birthday and the name of your first pet and we'll hook you right up. Just kidding. Seriously though, the martial arts is truly a lifelong persuit and choosing an art should be done with a lot of care to ensure that you find an art that meets your needs both physically and mentally. Best of luck and we'll be happy to help in your search any way we can.

Welcome, and happy posting! :wavey:

Here are several previous discussions that might help you choose the right art for yourself - here, here, and here. You could also try clicking on the search feature in the blue bar and entering terms like "choose school" - lots of people have had the same questions you have. Good luck finding the right art, and instructor (often more important that the art) for you!

Welcome to Martial Talk. Check out the schools in your area and visit as many as you can. One will "click" then check it out more in depth. You will find "your" art. Good Luck.

Welcome to MT, good to have you with us---and so far as your hamstrings are concerned, you're gonna wind up doing a fair amount of stretching to untighten them, no matter which one you choose. Starting a stretching program right now would actually be a good idea, so that when you actually pick an art and start attending classes you'll be up to speed.

As far as which are to choose, that depends on a lot of factors, as Terry pointed out. Check out the threads Kacey pointed you to for starters. There are a lot of different issues that you should probably sort out: your main objective in MA; whether you are looking for a striking art, grappling art, versatile mix (such as Hapkido); hard or soft style; more emphasis on kicks vs. less, and so on and on and on.... I would suggest visiting a number of schools, to see as many different MAs as you can in action, and keep track of which ones kick the gong for you. A lot of times, people see an art being practiced and know that that's the one for them (or, conversely, that it's definitely not for them)...

Greetings and Welcome to MT...
