I'm looking for sugesstions for 500gb storage device. Would like something that include the B/up software...I looked a Adaptec's snapserver 110 that looks good but I'd like something to compare it with......I had looked at Backup Exec but our IT director thought that was to "fancy" for us.....

less fancy to me would be a machine capable of acceptable performance (fast enough to not be "that slow P.O.*. server", but of course not top of the line hardware either). and run 4 250GB HD's in a raid configuration (obviously 2 HD's would be the backups).

...could be assembled quite inexpensively, and perform at least as good as a factory built system.

now if your company insists on buying servers that are assembled and warrantied then im out of suggestions. parts are just more fun to me lol

For 2 of my customers i build a storage device with the storage central from Netgear ( more info on product: see here

It's a great machine because you can choose wich drives you want to use.
Because of warranty and service i always choose seagate or western digital ( whatever is available ;) )

It has no own backup software but there is quite a lot free to use stuff around the net.
At the moment i'm testing with a freeware programme that looks very promising :)
