Apparently the left has decided that fighting to relieve 3rd world debt isn't enough for Bono and his U2 buddies. (Although I think Bono led that charge.) So, some lefties engaged in the type of behavior typical of the left...

From the article:

U2 and its frontman Bono, known for their global poverty-fighting efforts, were accused of dodging taxes in Ireland by activists who crashed their performance at England's Glastonbury festival.
The anti-capitalist group Art Uncut inflated a 6-metre balloon emblazoned with the message "U Pay Your Tax 2." Security guards wrestled them to the ground before deflating the balloon and taking it away. About 30 people were involved in the angry clash.

LOL, I watched it on the telly, wasn't a riot, hardly anyone noticed it but there have been complaints from the press at the heavy handed security people who threatened photographers who weren't involved in the demo as well as demonstrators who were acting peacefully. Spin it how you want Bill but your obsession with the left is worrying, it's blinding you.

LOL, so it's actually the left digging at Bono...
whoda thunk it....
:D

Well they are sort of left, in a sort of arty way lol!

If you replace the 'right' 'women','Jews', 'Gays', 'Catholics' or the 'blacks' for the 'lefties' in Billcihaks post we would be looking at some of the most bigotted posts on this site and people would be up in arms about it. If someone posted up so many posts slagging off the Right, there would be uproar so why is billcihak allowed to get away with frankly some of the most outrageous posts here, some people even think it's amusing but again replace the 'left' with the ethnic/sexual/gender/political/religious group of your choice and see how his posts read.
This is an observation which needs thinking about not an attack btw.

Ah, cut him some slack...in his Black&White world (or should I say red and blue) there are only his guys (Palin) and Leftist Communist freaks....

:D

But yeah, you are right, if it was anything other than 'the left' he targeted we would have long since pointed out his narrow mindedness...

no, wait, we have been doing that since November of last year....
:lfao:

I know it is probably dangerous in general, but I tend to ignore the likes of him with no original thought and the incabability to broaden the view just a smidgeon or even making the honest attempt to look at things from a different angle, not even forcing him to do a 180....

I'm sure the protester's/artists reimbursed the people in the audience for the disturbance during the concert. Nothing like going to a concert, after a hard weeks work, only to have silly lefties come in and throw a tantrum durning the show.

Thomas Sowell, in his book "Intellectuals and Society," addresses the current line of argument:

Those whose specific ideas or general vision are different-the benighted- are often treated as unworthy obstacles to progress, nuisances to be disregarded, circumvented, or discredited, rather than as people on the same moral and intellectual plane, whose arguments are to be engaged factually and logically. The widespread and casual use of such phrases as "raising the consiousness" of others or assertions that opponents "just don't get it" reveal a preference for avoiding a confrontation on equal terms, which would itself mean surrendering part of the vision of the anointed. College speech codes with subjective criteria and often "re-education" provisions (Note: see the post here in the study about the actor Tracy Morgan) for those expressing benighted opinions emphasize the same preference in academic institutions, where intellectuals have their greatest direct control.
..................................................................

The subtle hints at charges of racism, sexism, homophobia...all are a means to discredit and silence someone who disagrees with left world view. Easier to silence than tolerate or debate isn't it. That is one of the reasons that I am posting about the left and their tactics.

Read the Irish newspaper's report mate, for crying out loud it's Glastonbury, home of the Left!!

You know you are actually quite offensive, you weren't there, didn't see it live on the TV, haven't read the neutral reports and are trying to make something out of nothing. A giant balloon was pushed around the crowd which they enjoyed btw, as I said it's Glastonbury ( far too left for you), the home of left demos. The security people were heavy handed when they tried to stop the people from the arts group entering, a couple of press photographers were threatened as well.

ah, yes, getting the sources of the incident....

You do know I'm not on the left don't you? I don't support the left, never have done but I don't believe in being bigoted and blaming everything wrong in the world on one group of people who believe in a certain way which is exactly what you are doing. Yes I would say exactly the same things if you were preaching for the left and blamed the right for everything wrong as well.

Did they reimburse the fans who weren't "delighted" by their impromptu protest? Much like the animal activists who throw red paint on fur coats, or burn down ski lodges and car dealerships. I guess it is a much smaller scale but no less annoying to those people who just want to watch U2.

from the article:

U2 played the Glastonbury Festival in Britain for the first time last night, and their performance was briefly disrupted when a group protesting about the band’s alleged tax avoidance inflated a large balloon carrying the slogan ‘U Pay Your Tax 2′.
Of course, no conservative is going to quibble about the band’s right to take all legally-available steps to minimize their tax liability. The trouble is, such business dealings sit rather uneasily alongside Bono’s repeated calls for Western governments to send more money to developing nations, and write off outstanding debt.
From the conservative point of view, if Bono devoted his energy to encouraging private individuals and business to hand over their cash to charities, there wouldn’t be an issue here; the problem is, if governments are to send more money to Africa they need to get it from someone, and that someone is you, me and U2.
It’s a minor quibble though, and the self-righteous lefties of Art Uncut, who staged last night’s protest, and other activists, have nothing to complain about — they simply don’t like the idea of people getting rich, whether it’s rock stars or investment bankers.

Even if you accept that developing countries might have missed out on an infinitesimal percentage of U2′s millions, that’s been more than outweighed by the millions raised by benefit gigs in which the band has been involved, while Bono personally has done much to encourage action by world leaders, even if he’s at times guilty of over-simplifying the issues. He’s also, compared with other celebrity activists, commendably apolitical, having praised George W. Bush for his AIDs prevention initiatives.
Glastonbury being what it is these days, the protest was quickly snuffed out by security staff with an efficiency that would not have looked out of place on the streets of Tehran, Damascus or Beijing. The festival used to be very much a counter-culture affair, a Mecca for activist organizations such as Art Uncut. Now it’s all about corporate tie-ins, wall-to-wall coverage on the BBC and middle-class kids in designer *wellies (it always rains at Glastonbury).

And I should care about U2 why?

Btw just been chatting to my daughter who's down at Glastonbury who told me most people didn't notice the balloon or the demo. I've been down there myself so who do you think I should believe, my own eyes or some right wing media outlet with an agenda, as to the people who go to Glastonbury, it may be shown on the BBC ( BBC2 actually) but it's the same type of people there who have always been there, in many cases like me it is exactly the same people that have always gone not just the same type! You've been of course so can verify what you site says?

When I was younger my friends cousin from Germany came to stay for a couple of weeks. It was during the first Bush's campaign against Dukakis. We were supporters of Dukakis and when she said she wanted to protest Bush when he made a campaign stop at the local Jr. college, I went with her. She made a couple of signs and somehow we were allowed to go right up front only a few rows back from the stage right in the center, or just a little to the left. I was sort of amazed we actually got that close because of the signs we had, although we didn't actually hold them up till bush came out. As we were moving to our spot the Bush campaign was playing a video of Dukakis in the tank, over and over again. It was not a good look for Dukakis.

So, Bush comes out and we start waving our anti-bush signs. Well, the guys around us didn't like that and started saying that we shouldn't be where we were. One guy started to grab at her sign and wouldn't stop. Having been studying for a while I pointed at him and said "Leave the sign alone," and I gave him a menacing stare. It worked and he stopped grabbing. Then he said something. He said "Look, we support Bush, that's why we are here, you belong over there with them, " and he pointed to a group of protesters behind a rope line, all waving anti-bush, pro-dukakis signs. It stopped me in my tracks. I thought, He's right. I looked at my friends cousin and said, "we have to put the signs down." She wasn't happy but I mentioned that the guy was actually right. We stopped waving the signs and then after the rally we went home.

That was my first experience with political rude behavior, and I was a part of it. As I have grown up, I see most bad political behavior coming from the left and the democrats. These rude people at the U2 concert are just one of many examples.:soapbox:

That's a nice story, but he wasn't right, and neither were you-there's no such thing as a "free speech zone," it's all supposed to be a free speech zone, from Canada to Mexico and from sea to shining sea.

That includes the right to be "politically rude," btw.

there is such a thing as common courtesy elder and the left violates it without hesitation. They had a place for the other side but it was a Bush rally, so being a decent person isn't a bad thing. that is also why I keep politics in the study and why I try to be polite on the study.

You do a good job mate! While certain others mock you and accuse you of bigotry, you always maintain a ploite bearing. Good for you mate!

WARNING: RANT ON

Aye, I concur with the polite part right enough, YL, which is deserving of praise in an area that can be quite the reverse of that.

However, and I mean you no ill-will BillC but Tez is quite right in what she says.

I've being trying to hint and nudge for a while but whether you're (plural for many poltical commentators here) blind in the Left eye or blind in the Right one makes not the slightest bit of difference on an American forum it appears. Partisan blather rules the day, day after day after day.

The harshest general post I ever made here passed without trace, other than upsetting John (Twin Fist) for which I apologised as I meant it as a sincere observation rather than something abusive. What I essentially said is that politics, as presented on this board, is discussed as if by children, as there is no middle-ground where common sense and discourse can flourish. There is only black and right {see what I did there? Funny huh? No, not really, I quite agree}.

"Don't read the Study then" is the usual response to this - well, I'm here at MT a lot and most of the traffic is in the Study and an awful lot of the 'visible' stuff is Republican verbage, some genuinely interesting but much just 'drum beating'. Why should I have to 'dial out' my reading? Surely the onus is on the posters to not be deliberately controversial?

It's tiresome and it achieves nothing other than aggrivating the majority of members who don't give much of a darn about which political party a person has the "Blind In Both Eyes" hots for.

Would I ever vote Republican from what I've seen here on this board? Not in a million years. That doesn't mean I vilify those that do vote so, even those who, at first blush, I would never have dreamed I'd get along with? Not at all. I don't determine who I like or don't like by who they vote for - I try to judge them for who they actually are.

A little courtesy the other way for those of us who dont think Hitler was a Socialist would be much appreciated - 'cos if I ever hear the blanket term 'Leftist' used as a term of abuse again I'm out-a-here (the Study) for good.

If it can't be helped then keep the politcal nonsense in the 'politcal' forum - there is one, so it's best to use it.

WARNING OVER: Rant off - going to bed.

Folks,
If you've got a problem with a post, use the RTM button. Otherwise, let's stick to debating the ideas and not attacking each other.

Hey, I'm tired and a bit cranky right now.

Tez is right.
Yorkshire is right.
Suk is right.

See 3 rights. no lefts.
Buy the fish, behave and all that stuff.
