I tried to get a pair from Sakura, but when I went by the women's guide (buy a size down), it was too small. I had to return these, which I hated because of the hassle and return costs. Now the size 7 I wear is out so I had to get a refund. I hate getting shoes by mail as you always go through this and have to pay 10 dollars at least in shipping. I've looked at Sport's Authority and other stores but I can't find a simple Adidas brand (or any other) in the stores. Where the Hell can I find a pair so I can try it on for fit before I buy it?

If your school doesn't stock them, try asking your instructor to see if he knows of another school that may stock the kinds of shoes that you are looking for.

Otherwise, if you are up for a trip up I-93, you can try:

The best all-round martial arts shoes I've found so far are the Official Shoes of Guru Stevan Plinck's Cabang of Pukulan Pencak Silat Sera. I'm not sure if they're available just anywhere.

They are known as "Converse Hi Tops with Hemp uppers".

Seriously.

  • They provide enough ankle support for almost anything.
  • They aren't too heavy.
  • They give great foothold and allow good sensitivity with the ground.
  • They are cheap.
  • The hemp ones last forever.
  • You can use them as wrestling shoes in a pinch.
  • They just pull your martial arts ensemble together and turn it into High Fashion :p

I have odd-sized feet and finding the right feel in my TKD shoes was a struggle. I suggest if you don't have a martial arts supply store nearby that you attend a few tournaments as there usually is a supplier who may have several shoes on hand to try/buy.

Good luck!

My instructor brought me a couple of pairs to try. He always works with adidas to avoid size problems, etc.

If your school doesn't bring items, you can ask your instructor some place in your city or trustable websites to buy. ;)

How about wrestling shoes? Available in virtually every sports store in America, just don't lace the ankles to high or too tight and you will be fine.

Well, Silky Way in Boston e-mailed me to say that they carry Adidas so next time I'm in Chinatown for my language classes, I'll swing by. Thanks folks.:)

I happened to be in Derry on Saturday. They are going out of business.
The store was almost empty.

Chuck Taylor Con's are great, I've worn them for years. I'm gonna try some of the hemp ones mentioned.
Adidas Copa or Samba styles are good too, if you want to pay for them, $75 & up. Bracara IV's are cheaper, about $40
