A few weeks ago, I went to the MA Supershow in Las Vegas and met several MA legends, iclusing Bill Wallace, Jhoon Rhee, & Ernie Reyes Sr. Wallace is in his 60's & has has double hip replacements, & a knee replacement & still kicks like a mule! Reyes trains like a maniac every day & his body makes him look like an older version of Manny Pacquiao! GM Rhee is 79 & still does 1000 push-ups a day!I realized that it's not those younger than me that I have to keep up with, it's my Seniors! I gotta step up my game:)

aye...
Not a legend but my friend is 20 years my senior and while I might have had her licked in the technique department and flexibility, she was running circles around me in terms of strength endurance and sheer determination...not to mention she had some mean handy work if you stepped withing her reach!

I know it's not everybody of their generation, the old folks homes are full of the couch potatoes, but dangit, I'll consider myself blessed if I can still do half the stuff they do at that age!

(OK, I never got up to 1k pushups...)

I had heard that Jhoon Goo Rhee was making a point of showing that people his age can keep in very good shape. Something for me to aspire to. I guess I better get started quick! I will probably need all the time I can get. :)

It was a shame I was out of town for that (your neck of the woods actually :) ); It would have been fun. Regardless, such people are truly inspiring and why I still act, feel and consider myself young at 53.

Speaking of which, Tom Laughrin, the actor who popularized the Billy Jack movies of the seventies, turned 80 years old today. Time sure does fly.

We will knock you silly, take you to the ground, and force-feed Metamucil to you!!

Ive never really thought in terms of keeping up with Other Students.
For me, its just Improving as a Practitioner.
And if i get better or keep up with Other Students along the way, then so be it.

I agree with you on your outlook...it's just hard not to compare sometimes, especially if another student picks up on some things quicker. But I will try to keep your advice in mind.

Heres something that can help.

No matter how good you are, someone is better. No matter how much youve won, someone has won more. Just because you dont know these people or train with them doesnt make it any different. Its best to focus on what YOU can do, rather than worrying about comparing yourself to others.

Both Bill and GM Rhee have long been an inspiration to me and though I've trained with both at times, I can give you better perspective on KJN Ernie since I have been his student for 34 years. He always lives his training, but right now he's preparing to test next spring for 8th dan at the age of 65 (BTW, I'll test then for 7th) and he plans on being in his lifetime best shape. All of our mastery testers began our testing process 12 months out with a strict nutrition plan, weight training, cardio, ect. We are doing online journals to support each other (and so he can "encourage" any of us who are slacking). The man is a machine. He trains 2-3x/wk in MMA and Submission Grappling with both Frank Shamrock and Bob Cook (head MMA coach at AKA who coaches top MMA fighters like Cain Velazquez, John Fitch, Josh Koscheck, ect) and a lot of the AKA guys come over to play and at his age, KJN Ernie is in there rolling with them. He also trains Muay Thai, TKD and Escrima on a regular basis. The man trains every day even if it means doing burpees, push ups and sit ups at the airport waiting for his flight.

A couple of years ago, he decided he wanted to get a perspective of what is was like to be a beginner again so he could relate more to the white belts, so he took up Bikram yoga. He decided that he would train it for a year straight, no matter what his schedule, healthy or sick, no excuses. And for a man with as busy of a schedule as he has, that was no small feat. He made well over 400 days straight. Now, his goal is to come into his mastery test in his all time best shape AND to be a better martial artist than ever at 65.

Young guys are "running to something", while old guys are "running away from something". The secret is to keep running or you will be overtaken. Bill Wallace, Jhoon Rhee, & Ernie Reyes Sr. are inspirations to all of us that this contest called life can be dealt with way into our golden years.
Thanks guys for being that inspiration. :)

GM Ernie told us about his yoga (400+ straight days of "hot yoga" is sick!) & all the other stuff he's doing. The man is a freak of nature...in a good way! BTW, as the head of the organization, how is he tested in his own Art? I could see others testing him in the Arts which he crosstrains. Just curious.

You are an inspiration to me, sir

Iceman,
He (and we) are tested by the seniors and masters from the arts that we cross train in. The last time he and (his partner and ERWCWMA co-founder) KJN Tony Thompson tested the board included Jhoon Rhee (TKD), Frank Shamrock and Bob Cook (MMA), Dan Inosanto and Jimmy Tacosa (FMA'a), Ralf and Cesar Gracie (BJJ), Tom Patire (CDTand LRT), Benny Urquidez and "Woodman" and "Dr. Knees" from Fairtex (kickboxing/Muay Thai) among others.

Oh for crying out loud…..:tantrum: Stop with the stories about older MAist still training hard…. I mean…. I’m older… not as old as them… but older and you are making it REAL hard for me to continue using the “I’m too old” excuse :disgust: :uhyeah:

I hope I can do half as much when I get to thier age.... and I am not that far off..... but since I can't do as much as they do now... I got to get busy training

That's actually what I was feeling inside, but I didn't wanna say it. ;)
