This weekend I got my first Smartphone and I've been having fun (?) going through squillions of apps. Apps for keeping track of your diet, alarm clocks, games, and of course, lots of different workouts.

I downloaded a Pilates app that I have yet to try, but of course my mind went straight to martial arts. On Droid the list is relatively short, and about half the list is taken up by movies and games. I was really hoping to find a Systema "workout" of solo exercises - there are several that can be done safely without supervision that can really help improve one's overall game, but it was not to be. Maybe I'll develop one with my virtuoso development-fu.

But it's an interesting question. Should there be martial arts apps? I know it's the sort of thing one needs to learn through face-time, but I think there's a lot of potential for enhancing an existing practice.

There already are. Rich Hale's Kenpo Journal predates has been around for a good while now. With full web connectivity, one can go to youtube or to watch whatever they want. There are tools out there that will help even a novice coder write a functional app....I suspect it wont be long before we see mt members promoting apps of their own.

You know, after posting this I found out that some of the guys in my group are putting together a "Pocket Systema." I'm surprised there wasn't one already.

And yes, I've used the portable Youtube function too. Some of us work out in the park on Saturdays, and I was thrilled to whip out a video of something for us to work on one day. The homeless guys at the other end of the picnic shelter were totally impressed. :ultracool

I just had a vision of myself, balancing an iphone on a tree branch in the park so I could follow along LOL!

No thanks I'll stick with class.

Sounds like you guys can afford to go youtube to check on vids of techniques to practice or try... *jealous* :waah: Check out the latest vid I posted in the Weapons Videos section of the armoury to see an indication of what's available to us :p

Seriously though, I know there's a couple of apps floating around that help the user work on stretching and core work etc, not sure about actual MA per se. The Ebooks do tend to leave a lot to be desired I'm afraid

Tere are a couple of BJJ apps but they are kind of crude... technique only like a dvd.
