Shackleton's whisky to be dug up

Two crates of Scotch whisky which belonged to the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton are to be recovered after a century buried in the Antarctic ice.

The McKinlay and Co whisky was found buried under a hut built and used during Shackleton's unsuccessful South Pole expedition between 1907 and 1909.

The crates, which are encased in ice, were first found three years ago.

Awesome! It'd be great if the company was able to take it and make a Centenial or 'Shackleton' limited edition or such. Cool history!

Hmmm...will Metallica's next cover song be "Whisky in the ice-oh" ?

Probably not since Metallica went dry. When Metallica hits the stage, alcohol sales are cut off at the venue.

A friend of mine went to a Metallica concert last week. He said they should change their name to Kumbayallica. He said they kept asking the crowd if they were feeeling good and they were alright.

Reminds me of "Fossil Beer"...

The bacteria used to make it was "resurrected" from 45 million year old insects encased in amber by scientists doing medical research. They found an ancient bacteria related to yeast that turned out useless for medicine..but great for beer.

Nah, if it were any damn good Shackleton would have drank it. Forced retreat or not, who leaves good booze behind?

Guys trying to save their lives that's who. If choice came to making good time traveling X amount of distance to get to some place warm, and hauling extra weight around in a survival situation... I'd make good time. Alcohol up there does the OPPOSITE of what a lot of people think it does. It does NOT warm you up. Hypothermia is not something to mess with. Shackleton probably knew that.
