Don't listen to the liberals - Right-wingers really are nicer people, latest research shows

George Orwell once wrote that politics was closely related to social identity. 'One sometimes gets the impression,' he wrote in The Road To Wigan Pier, 'that the mere words socialism and communism draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, nature-cure quack, pacifist and feminist in England'.
Orwell was making an observation. But today a whole body of academic research shows he was correct: your politics influence the manner in which you live your life. And the news is not so good for those on the political Left.
There is plenty of data that shows that Right-wingers are happier, more generous to charities, less likely to commit suicide - and even hug their children more than those on the Left.

In my experience, they are also more honest, friendly and well-adjusted.
Much of this springs from the destructive influence of modern liberal ideas.
In the Sixties, we saw the beginning of a narcissism and self-absorption that gripped the Left and has not let go.
The full-scale embrace of the importance of self-awareness, self-discovery and being 'true' to oneself, along with the idea that the State should care for the less fortunate, has created a swathe of Left-wing people who want to outsource their obligations to others.

Gotta love Orwell's description, but add, not just in England...

I don't know if Orwell would be appalled or gratified at this ...propaganda....

'The Road To Wigan Pier' is a book written by Orwell, so to quote it as his own words is...well you know....

Also, Orwell was commissioned to write the book by the Left Book Club, which funded fiction with politically left topics. To take one line from the book which, if memory serves, has a much different theme, is misrepresentation of the facts.

I really have to laugh at how pathetic politics is getting... For the record, I ain't a hippy.

Oh it is from the Daily Mail.....maybe it is just....taking the piss?

The Daily Mail?!?!? Are you kidding me??? The British Imperialist rag???? The one that supported Nazism and fascism???? The same one whose readers are more than 50% CONSERVATIVE?????

:lfao:

Wiki on the Daily mail.

I suppose it would be impolite to bring up the earlier - better supported - research that shows that right wingers are whining cry-babies largely motivated by fear, with a sense of entitlement and a tendency to blame others for their problems. Oh yes, and the even broader based studies showing that they are less capable of dealing with ambiguity and complexity. Because, y'know, that would be bad for their self esteem and prove that the rest of us hate them and hate Jesus and hate America and hate football and hate Christmas and ...

I think both studies are rather poo-poo. I don't see how poltical views affect things like happiness.

I also don't see how anybody could live in the U.S. and hate Liberals. Look at our Constitution, it's very liberal (the idea of a Constiution and Bill of Rights is also a Liberal idea). The very nature of Democracy is a liberal idea. Our system of government is called Liberal Democracy! To hate Liberalism (as a whole) is to say that you hate all these things!!!

Not to mention, Democrats tend to be more moderate then Liberal, and I'm geussing that these studies were "Republican V. Democrat" is nature.

You're talking old school liberalism--Thomas Paine, John Stuart Mill, and the like; those who advocated individual freedoms, autonomy, and self-governance. Even most of today's Republicans qualify as liberal under this traditional definition.

The "liberal" and "conservative" labels thrown around today are much more specific and polarizing then the definition of liberal that encompasses the Founding Documents as you've pointed out. This is, as one may guess, part of the problem.

I know, it's now called Libertarianism. I was more refering to the fact that (supposidly) Conservatives want little to no change, and Liberals want to have lots of change. The Left is supposed to be about the Government staying out of your life, letting you come up with your own oppions, and helping you out when you need it. The Right is supposed to be about encouraging morality (through a near state-sponsored religion), encourage you come up with your own oppions (as long as they don't contradict the Religion), and staying completly out of your life otherwise.

It seems (to me) that if the abouve is true, Democrats tend to be a mix of Left and Right (more so then Republicans). Or, that they are indiffernit to some of what I listed.

Yep thats the one! They hate the present govenment and every article is slanted towards the right. they do some good articles when there is government sleaze etc but will only focus on the Labour party not on any sleaze coming from the Tories, there's no even handed reporting.
I should point perhaps that George orwell wrote that in 1937 not exactly recently. The world has changed a tad since then.

Also, Orwell (a fellow Socialist) probably went on to refute those comments, and then insult Conservatives/Free Marketist

While political party affiliation in the United States is not a perfect indicator of religiosity, it is no secret that the "red sates" (Republican/Conservative) are primarily red due to the overwhelming political influence of conservative Christians. If there were a strong correlation between Christian conservatism and societal health , we might expect to see some sign of it in a red-state America. We don’t . Of the twenty-five cities with the lowest rates of violent crime, 62% are in "blue" (Democratic) states, and 38 % are in "red" states. OF the twenty-five most dangerous cities, 76 % are in red states, and 24 % are in blue states. In fact, three of the five most dangerous cities in the U.S. are in the pious state of Texas. The twelve states with the highest rates of burglary are red. Twenty four of the twenty nine states with the highest rates of theft are red. Of the twenty two states wit the highest rates of murder, seventeen are red.

I geuss Conservatives are happy crimminals, and Moderates are PO'ed law abiders. That study seems more reasonable, but I still find it somewhat hard to believe. That whole "correlation doesn't imply causation" thing.

Not a study-just crime statistics from the FBI webpage....and yes, there is correlation, and no causation; for all I know, those "red-state" crimes were all committted by Democrats....though the odds are against it.

I meant more of the studies that show that one side or the other is happier seems unlikely, correlation doesn't imply causation (I don't know about the stats though). I do know however that the US needs some pretty serious Justice System reform, and that Conservatives are... well, Conservative, so it seems unlikely that the Conservatives will be the ones to perform that over-haul. Which makes me want to start anouther thread...
