DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with perjury and other offenses Monday — and got a stern lecture about the importance of telling the truth — after a trove of raunchy text messages contradicted his sworn denials of an affair with his chief aide.

The 37-year-old "Hip-Hop Mayor" who brought youth and vitality to the job in this struggling city of 900,000 could get up to 15 years in prison for perjury alone and would be automatically expelled from office if convicted.

So often, from Nixon to Clinton to Kilpatrick...... it's the lie/cover up that actually does them in.

This was so avoidable, first by not playing musical beds with his aide, second by not firing good cops to hide his indiscretions, and third by telling the truth when asked under oath. Kilpatrick is unfit to hold office and hopefully will be engaged in a different kind of romance when sent to jail on felony convictions.

So sorry, but the Republicans have more than their share of similar - or worse - fiends to be clucking over this one.

What? How ridiculous is it to make the comparison there is much of a difference betwixt these 2 corrupt entities known as republicans and democrats. Anytime any public official lies, cheats, steals, commits adultry they should be jailed for perjury. The oath of office has ben violated and the american people foot the bill for these jokers to do evil. No thanks dude- lock them up with the rest of the criminals.

The point is that the press would have been HIGHLIGHTING his party affiliation, if it had been a republican.

It is bad no matter who does it, and I dont think anyone would argue with that.

The man is a crook. He uses his office for his own benefit. I just got done doing training with some Detroit Metro guys, and they all think he is a joke.

He used the mayor's mansion to host his own parties and then fired the deputy chief when he tried to investigate an assault that occurred at the party.

We used to have Detroit aviation fly in to pick up felons at our facility. Last time they came in with a beat up crown vic, and when asked why, their response was.. "Kwame's wife needed a new navigator, so he sold our helicoptors". The man is NOT liked in Detroit except by those who benefit from him.
