Amongst the several explanations put forward as to why there has been a huge decline in criminal damage over the past few years is the thought that the widespread prevelance of electronic devices gives 'idle hands' something else to do.

It sounds a little on the implausible side but there might be something to it - if a kid is gaming through the evening he/she can't be out smashing up bus shelters.

Think combinations of factors. Your article has a number of factors attached; add them all together, rather than consider one to be a single source.

true, but it seems to be the one thing that coincides with the drop of vandalism: smartphone sales...it certainly has a big part in it.

Who would have thought tha the lack of socializing could be a good thing.

While the RAF likes to recruit well balanced individuals it also, for certain trades like Pilot, Air Defence Operator and Air Traffic Controller, likes people who have a high skill on computer games. Specifically the ones that have you doing a few things at once.
We've found that quite a few lads are using the MMA fitness 'games' to get fit as well as just playing the shoot em ups.
This may shake up some peoples perception of gamers though http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21039062

Please don't think that I didn't already do that, cd; I was just highlighting one factor amongst the several as being one that was of interest because it was out of the ordinary.
