China to Sterilize 10,000

Ah, so it's a punitive measure rather than a program to curb overpopulation. I was about to ask, isn't 10,000 in a population like China's less than half a drop in the bucket?

And harsh as the measure may seem, I suppose sterilization is better than cutting it off. ><

No doubt it's a symbolic measure. Some think tanks believe China will need to fight a few wars in the near future if only to keep their masses of young, unmarried and uneducated men employed.

-Wait! That one-child policy isn't working out?

But seriously, the planet, afaik, can only support so many people. Think the number might be 2Billion max. China spent a lot of time getting rid of female offspring cause males were deemed more imporant to pretty much everything. Downside was a high number of males, lower number of females. Just can't get a date!

Sterilization is not the answer. Better policy towards population growth is.

No, the answer is in space exploration. Like Mars… NOW. Instead of killing the unborn, find a way to colonize Mars (or even parts of the Moon.)

Science fiction you say?

We could set foot on Mars in a year if we wanted to. We could have a moon base in a year also. Within 10 years we could have a city on Mars.

Didn’t “Old Europe” get rid of surplus population by colonization? Well, we could do it again.

Better than killing babies, tell you that.

I can think of a lot of people here that should be sterilised and it has nothing to do with overpopulation!!
To clarify. Here means Aus, not MAT. I'm sure every country has their share of #&*@ heads!

You're talking about a concept called Carrying Capacity. It was theorized that the Earth can only support a finite number of people. It could be anywhere between 2 and 40 billion. Considering that we're over the 6 billion point right now, it is more than 2 billion! The problem is that it depends on a wide range of variables.

If you read the "Tragedy of the Commons" it will give you a really good understanding of what is probably the most important of those variables. Resources. In any population with limited resources, if everyone shares them and population grows, eventually resources run out. There is no way that China can sustain itself based on the resources that it has. If anything ,their overpopulation is what will be the undoing of China.

10,000 people won't do a whole lot for overpopulation, but might give people something to think about.

'Over-population' is a red herring most of the time. The planet has plenty of resources to support the current population and realistically projected future population. The problem is not the number of people, the problem is the extremely inefficient, wasteful and destructive methods of resource use and distribution that are currently the norm.
