Canada radio stations told to censor Dire Straits

Thu, Jan 13 2011
VANCOUVER (Reuters EXCERPT: ) - Canadian radio station have been warned to censor the 1985 Dire Straits hit "Money for Nothing," after a complaint that the lyrics of the Grammy Award-winning song were derogatory to gay men.
A St. John's, Newfoundland, station should have edited the song to remove the word "******" because it violates Canada's human rights standards, according to ruling this week by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council.
A unnamed listener to OZ FM in the Atlantic Coast province complained to the industry watchdog last year after hearing the song, which features Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler and fellow rock star Sting.
The council said it realized Dire Straits uses the word sarcastically, and its use might have been acceptable in 1985 when the best-selling "Brothers in Arms" album was released, but said it was now inappropriate.

The line (Is it a stanza in a song?) in question:
So, I'm guessing, just to be consistent, Canada has banned 75% or so of Rap music?
I mean, you can't rap about "Bitches ain't ****, but ho's and tricks" that's obivously hateful towards women, not to mention rap's use of the dreaded "N" word. No NWA in Canada? This is where people might wake up to how ridiculous this PC crap really is.

And Knopfler himself has been signing the song with different lyrics for years.

MOve along, nothing to see. This is not the scandal your looking for. :yoda:

Sometimes people with good intentions do go to far. The best thing to do for songs with lyrics you don't like is to not listen to them. If your kids listen to them, make sure they know your view on the lyrics.

Most people don't listen to the lyrics nohow...

the song is 25 years old now....good grief, took them this long to figure out there was a bad word in it?

(what's *******? I hate swear filters, honest, I do!)

Great song,
In my opinion, the best opening of a song ever!!
Give it a listen.

My favourite rock joint used to open proceedings with this song on the video screen (such things being new-fangled and fancy back then :D).

Rhymes with maggot.

:chuckles: Aye. I do recall I used to smoke a pipe back then as I thought it made me look mature  and  some more!

Doesn't anyone remember that Knopfler was mocking the actions of two knuckleheads that were all brawn and no brain?

Yeah, but it just doesn't sound right now:

See the little bundle of sticks with the earring and the make up?
Yeah buddy, that's his own hair.
That little bundle of sticks got his own jet airplane.
That little bundle of sticks is a millionaire.

First Huck Finn for using the N-word, now Money for Nothing for using the F-word (no, the other F-word)

What's next, they'll censor Mein Kampf because somebody finally figured out it's anti-semitic?

I'm not sure what bugs me most: the censorship, or how poorly the censors have been paying attention.
