SEOUL, South Korea - Asiana plans to sue a California television station that mistakenly aired fake, racially offensive names for the pilots of the flight that crashed last week in San Francisco, the airline announced Monday.
The Korean carrier said it had selected a U.S. law firm and will soon file a petition with the courts on the grounds of defamation.
In a Friday report, Oakland TV station KTVU broadcast four erroneous names for the pilots of Flight 214 after a National Transportation Safety Board intern mistakenly confirmed them as being correct.
"This legal action is being taken because of the KTVU report that not only disparaged Asians in general through the use of racially charged epithets, but also severely damaged the reputation of Asiana Airlines," the company said in a statement.

I heard about this and wondered what the fallout would be. Here is a youtube clip from the actual news cast.

Ho Lee Fuk is right! How did this get through the entire newsroom and on the air?

It reminds me of this...

Although it was a pretty stupid thing to broadcast, I think there's far more blame for the NTSB, if they confirmed the names.
But there's no profit to be made by sueing the NTSB, and that's really what this is about.

Apparantly, the names came from an unpaid summer intern. I don't know how far the lawsuit will go in all honesty.

Does anyone really believe that a Summer intern did this? I think some coward gave those names to the intern as a joke, and then went, "Oh S***. He confirmed them!!!" And let that intern take the fall. I don't see an unpaid intern making that kind of call.

No I don't believe it. Plus, there's a reason why broadcasters are only on the air for a couple of hours when a workday is 8 hours long. The time not spent on the air is time spent doing show prep and getting ready for the broadcast, regardless of whether it is live or memorex. The newscasters skimped on their show prep and the station is bumbling for an excuse, any excuse for their big money talent getting caught red handed skimping their responsibilities.

This was unbelievably stupid, but suing them for something that happened during the event when it was breaking news, and that the govt. confirmed? No way.
