"Our firearms program is not about shooting. It is about fighting. When the concept of fighting is taken out of firearms training, we have forgotten the purpose of our training." - Lou Chiodo, GUNFIGHTERS Ltd.

Q. WHAT IS FORCE-ON-FORCE (FOF) TRAINING?

A. FoF is a reality based training method that induces stress and incorporates the use of threat recognition, assessment and decision-making with the realistic application of self-defense skills and post incident procedures. FoF training allows individuals to practice skills that cannot be effectively simulated in other training models.

Using the "Teach / Train / Fight" model, students are taught time tested, relevant skills in a supportive, positive environment beginning with the use of lecture and demonstration. Then, in a progressive, sequential manner, students develop their skill through repetition. Once students are comfortable with their skill level, they are placed in realistic simulations, which allow them to apply their skills against properly trained instructors playing the role of real criminals. Because of the interactive nature of scenario-based training, students must judge every situation, drawing upon and integrating the full spectrum of threat responses (awareness, distance, verbal skills, and when necessary, less lethal and lethal force options). This is done through the use of protective gear and realistic training devices designed to safely duplicate the function of a firearm (Simmunitions or Gas-Blowback Airsoft) or other defensive tools - the same protective gear and training devices used by law enforcement.

Q. WHY FOF?

A. There is nothing in training technology that can duplicate the human threat. Realistic training demands a well trained teaching staff to simulate the actions and reactions of a real assailant. It also demands the right equipment to create a safe environment, while still allowing students to respond as they would in a real encounter. This interactive training environment cannot be accomplished by shooting at paper or steel.

While shooting at paper and steel is essential to the development of a competent shooter, shooting at paper and steel is only one part of a much larger training picture. Three federal cases have already ruled that training must be relevant and realistic, that training must develop decision-making not just technical skill (Popow v. City of Margate, Zuchel v. Denver and Davis v. Macon County) and that scenario-based (FoF) training is the only training method capable of meeting these requirements. Training must also address the other dynamics of a lethal force encounter, including low light, multiple assailants, close range (Per FBI statistics most lethal force encounters (LFE) begin within 5'; almost all LFE begin within 10'), movement, and stress. Ignoring these training realities not only endangers your safety, it jeopardizes your ability to justify your actions should lethal force be necessary. Until you put yourself in these situations, you won't know how you're going to react.

Finally, because of the nature of the Simmunitions and Gas-Blowback Airsoft training guns used in law enforcement (identical to a firearm in every detail except the projectile, which is non-lethal), range exercises can be done safely in almost any environment. This allows us to offer you training in essential skills not possible on most ranges, while at the same time minimizing the cost of our FoF workshops (no range or ammunition expenses).

Q. AM I READY FOR FOF TRAINING?

A. FoF training is not for everybody, but neither is fighting for your life with a handgun, knife or other defensive tool. If you own a firearm for personal defense and your health allows vigorous activity, FoF training is an essential tool for developing skill, judgment and a winning mindset. FoF is not a "free-for-all"; students are taught specific skills and then placed in scenarios designed to draw out those skills. Training is designed to be safe and instill confidence by building on success. You will be coached according to your own rate of progression. Moreover, even though the training is demanding, it is also very rewarding.
