Pretty interesting video here.

It's about nine minutes long, but it definitely adds some new context to what may be going on there.

Basically, while some of the "pirates" are just that, pirates, some of them may be essentially a volunteer coast guard protecting their local waters from illegal chemical dumping and illegal poaching.

He also goes into the real history of Piracy as a reaction to British Impressment.

You may not agree with his presentation, but it's a pretty interesting piece. Check it out.

Well there ARE two sides to every story... if we're going to go after Pirates then we need to take care of those residing and patrolling around the islands of Indonesia ... but of course we'll get around to those won't we... provided they have something that is within our $$ interests... like these guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIQUGwAUqSg&feature=related some 400 + miles from their own coast and hijacking oil tankers worth hundreds of millions and holding said crews and ship hostage for ransom... now... if these guys from the same country aren't pirates... then what the hell are they?
A legitimate police force which is essentially what a governmental Coast Guard organization is wouldn't be taking hostages or crews off their ships by whatever context... they would/should simply tell the captains of the ship to steer away from their territorial waters much like ours do when ships veer/stray too close within the 3 mile limit or whatever it is.
But considering Somolia doesn't have an official government other than warlords trying to gain control over the country... how can there be an official government agency like a coastal patrol?

It is sad and believable that illegal dumping does take place off these countries who would otherwise be too poor and considered insignificant to even pay attention to when they protest. If they take it upon themselves to try and stop the dumping then they could hardly be called pirates... radical conversationalists maybe but not pirates.

Wait.

Are you implying that we're not worked up about piracy because it may be wrong, but rather because it may interfere with our oil imports?

Nah. Couldn't be.
