This is a cool article:

Chemical analysis of the bones of ancient Sudanese Nubians who lived nearly 2000 years ago shows they were ingesting the antibiotic tetracycline on a regular basis, likely from a special brew of beer. The find is the strongest yet that antibiotics were previously discovered by humans before Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928.

I'm sorry, Dr. Fleming, but we'll need that Nobel Prize back now... ;)
 
I like the story, but just because they were ingesting antibiotics doesn't mean that they had discovered them yet.

The article has a very romantic idea of that beer, but I have a feeling that it went more like this:
Drink water; get sick. Drink water from fire; don't get sick. Drink rotting grain 'juice' from fire; feeling much better now, TANKS!
